How to Buy Computer Speakers

The world of speakers is both a complex one, and a simple one. Purchasing a set of speakers may seem simplistic, but the variety may overwhelm people who have no experience with speaker systems.

Steps

  1. 1
Make sure you have enough room in your budget to afford a new pair of speakers. There is no point forcing yourself to live less just so you can afford a new set of speakers.
  2. Buy Computer Speakers Step 2.jpg
    2
Go to a store that sells speakers. There is a variety of options when it comes to this. Some speaker specific stores may have a greater variety in speakers, but may charge a lot more, whereas a electronics store may offer less choice, but it will sell them for a more affordable price.
  3. Buy Computer Speakers Step 3.jpg
    3
Consider the brand you wish to purchase. Some foreign brands such as Bose or Bang and Olufsen may cost a lot more then a commercial brand such as Polk, or Infinity. Make sure you put some substantial research in before making a choice, because you do not want to spend a lot of money, and end up with a system that does not fit your needs.
  4. TIPS

    Tips

    • Make sure you know the specifications of the speaker system that you wish to buy.
    • Do not impulse buy. This may work with other products, but when it comes to speakers, the best choice is to take time in any choice you are making
  • buy.

How to Become a Pixel Artist

Pixel Art is a form of electronic art created using a computer and a drawing software. It's associated with creating a picture by filling it in, pixel by pixel, rather than using graphic tools. In this guide, we will be using MS paint, available on any Windows computer (3.0x and up) to create your very own pixel images.

STEPS:
1. Become familiar with colors. Color is one of the most important parts of your image in terms of effect. Even black-white images have different shades of gray, which can be counted as color. In MS paint, as in most graphics programs, an advanced color picker is available. Let's call it RGB/HSL box. So, to open up RGB/HSL box, just double click any color, or click "colors" and select "edit colors" from the menu bar. Click "Define Custom Colors". Here, you see 6 text boxes: Hue, Sat, Lum and Red, Blue, Green. After experimenting with each, you will be able to figure out what they do. You can also change those values by moving the "target" on around a big color map and by moving the black arrow up and down, you can change the luminosity of the color. Experiment with the RGB/HSL box and then move on to next step.

2. Learn to dither. Dithering is a technique that blends your colors together, making them look smoother, or just creating interesting textures. There are 3 types of dithering: Basic dithering, stylized dithering and anti-aliasing. You will only learn basic dithering here, but it is easy to learn other two thereafter.

- Basic dithering is a 2x2 checkerboard pattern that is created outside of the color to make it blend with the other, lighter color (or darker) color. You can practice dithering by applying more or less to the image. See what the results look like.

- Once you master basic dithering, you can move on to stylized dithering, which instead of a checkerboard pattern, creates a random pattern of dots held together. It is used to create textures and more effects.

Anti-aliasing is used on lines to make them smoother. You will not need it in basic pixel art, although sometimes it can be useful.

3. Practice shading and lighting. When shading objects, you must always consider the lighting point, or sun. Once you decide where it is, imagine that object is in real life and shade it the way it would be shaded in real life. Decrease lum value of a color by 30 and increase hue by 5 and shade the area in. Then, dither it so the colors blend. Now, modify the shaded color: decrease lum value by 30 and increase hue by 10. Shade the area inside the shaded area; however, make it small, like 2 pixels or so. Then, dither. Now, depending on what material you're drawing (shiny or not), you need to add in lighting. This is done by increasing original color by 40 or 50 (whichever one looks better) and drawing a line or a little circle opposite from the shaded areas. It has to be about 2 pixels away from the outline and it should look real. Again, use dithering to fit it in.

4. Draw line art. Line art is the main part of your objects: it's the outline. Think of an object. Then, zoom in and draw the object, pixel by pixel. The only way you can get better at line art is if you practice a lot. Now, you can start colouring in the image using your techniques

5. Save your masterpiece. PNG and GIF formats are preferable over JPEG because they preserve the colors efficiently, rather than creating a "muddy" look. Whereas a BMP would preserve the image, it does not compress it at all and could have a very big file size.

TIPS:
-K.I.S.S! Keep it simple, stupid! Keep the number of colours to a minimum. Pixel art is created for devices with low processing power so the more info in the file, the harder the device has to work.

-Learn photo manipulation. Use a photo you took yourself or get permission to use someone else's photo. Paste the photo in Paint and make it smaller. Then, outline it. After that, erase the entire inside. Re-shade it so it looks pixelish.

-A great way to test out pixel art is to find out the resolution of your mobile phone screen. You can find this out in your manual or even on the phone websites.

-Animations can be created in Photoshop and Gimp, which can also be played on mobile phones, msn and blogs.

-Isometric pixel art is used to provide a 3-dimensional view without actual 3-dimensional processing. Objects are drawn from 26-30 degree angle although some isometric works are drawn from a 90 degree angle.

-Look at other pixel art works. Paste them in Paint, zoom in and see how they're made. Study them to learn about new techniques but don't plagiarize.

-You don't have to use ms paint to create pixel art. You can use programs such as Photoshop, Gimp 2 OR for mac Pixen. Most companies that use pixel art (eg, mobile phone games) use photoshop purely for the speed. A tint can be applied over a piece of work rather than changing every single pixel to a different colour eg for water.

-Try to make SAT values of your colors under 150 because above 150, your colors start to look too bright.

-Be creative.

How to Secure Your Wireless Home Network

This article describes techniques a user can use to secure his or her 802.11b/g/n wireless home network. Securing a wireless network is very important because if you don't, your neighbors can not only borrow your Internet connection, but also access your files and check up on what you're doing. Even worse, hackers can use your internet connection to upload illegal materials, and the FBI will ring your bell...

STEPS:
1. Connect to your router via your browser, by inputting something called a Gateway IP Address.

- To find your Gateway IP Address and connect to it in Windows

-Click Start > Run > type 'cmd' > Click 'Enter'

-Once the Command Prompt window opens, type 'ipconfig /all' and hit 'Enter'

-Locate the line labeled 'Gateway' and make note of the number that follows. It will look similar to
'192.168.1.1'

-Open Internet Explorer (or your favorite browser)

-Enter the Gateway IP Address into the address bar and click 'Enter

To find your Gateway IP Address and connect to it on a Mac

-Open your Finder and run 'Terminal' inside of Applications > Utilities

-Once the terminal window opens, type 'ipconfig -a' and hit 'Enter'

Locate the line labeled 'Gateway' and make note of the number that follows. It will look similar to '192.168.1.1'

-Open Safari (or your favorite browser)

-Enter the Gateway IP Address into the address bar and click 'Enter'.

2. Enable encryption on your access point.
Using 128-bit encryption or higher makes your Wireless Network more secure. WEP and WPA are entirely different encryption schemes. WEP has been proven insecure and can be cracked in a few minutes using free utilities that can be downloaded from the Internet. Using at least WPA is recommended, because it is much more secure, but is sometimes a bit harder to set up correctly than WEP is, and isn't completely secure.[1] [2] Some older access points or wireless cards do not support WPA2. If you have one of these, it is recommended that you purchase a newer one that supports WPA2, depending on how important you consider your security.

3. Set the router access password.
Anybody who gains access to the router configuration settings can disable the security you have set up. If you forget the password, most routers have a hardware reset that will restore all of the settings to factory defaults. The best option is to use a random sequence of the maximum length of characters - you only have to type that once, so it is not a big thing. When you connect to the router via LAN cable while setting it up, you can copy and paste the password onto the router and onto your local setting, so you never need to type it again.

-Use a secure password. Don't use easily guessed passwords for your WPA2 or router access passwords, such as "ABC123", "Password", or a string of numbers in order. Use something hard to guess that contains both upper and lowercase letters as well as numbers. Special characters such as !@#$% are not supported by some routers. The longer the key, the better, although the WPA2 key has a minimum and maximum length. Try to make a little mental effort -- good passwords might be hard to remember, but they are harder to crack.

-If you use a weak key then even WPA and WPA2 can be easily cracked within a day using a combination of special precomputed tables and dictionary attacks. The best way to generate a secure key is to use an offline random number generator or write the entire alphabet in uppercase and lowercase and numbers 0-9 on separate pieces of paper, mix the paper up and randomly pick up pieces and return them, mixing them up again each time; each character you pull out becomes a character in your key. You can also try throwing a pair of dice and using the resulting numbers as your password.

4.Change the Service Set Identifier (the network name or "SSID") from the default to something unique
A default SSID indicates to hackers that the network was set up by a novice and that other options (such as the password) are also left as the default. Use a name you can remember and identify, as the SSID has no influence on the security of your network (not even if you choose not to broadcast it).

5.  Enable MAC Address filtering on your Access Point or router.
A MAC (not to be confused with the computer model 'Mac') address is a code unique to every wireless networking card in existence. MAC Address filtering will register the hardware MAC Address of your networked devices, and only allow devices with known MAC Addresses to connect to your network. However, hackers can clone MAC addresses and still enter your network, so MAC address filtering should not be used in place of proper WPA2 encryption.

6. Don't disable the 'SSID Broadcast'.
Do not disable the 'SSID Broadcast' feature of your Access Point or router.
This seems counter-intuitive, but it is actually a bad idea.[3] Although this would make your network invisible to your neighbors, any determined hacker can still sniff out your SSID; and you are implicitly forcing your computer to shout out your SSID anywhere you are, while it is trying to connect to it. Anyone could then impersonate your router with that SSID, and get your credentials that way.

7. Disable remote login.
The first router worm brute forces its way into the router in this manner. Most default usernames are set to Admin. It isn't hard for a virus/worm to crack the password if the username is known. The good thing is that routers normally have this disabled by default. Be sure to confirm that it is disabled when you first set up your router and periodically thereafter. If you need to update your router setting remotely, only set up access for the time you are going to be connected.

8. Disable wireless administrating.
Finally, change the setting that allows administrating the router through a wireless connection to 'off' (meaning that you need to connect with a LAN cable for administration). This disables any wireless hacking into the router.

TIPS :
-You may need to upgrade the Firmware of your Access Point or Router if it doesn't have any of these features. In some situations, you will need to purchase a new Access Point.

-You need to set the same WPA2 Settings on your computer and router.

-Check your Access Point or Routers' documentation on how to enable or disable security features.

How to Blur the Background of a Digital Image

Maybe you have taken a picture of a group of people, and now you want to highlight one individual? Or perhaps you thought you've taken the perfect picture, except something in the background is distracting from the photo?

To blur the background of an image with Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or GIMP, try one of the following methods.

Steps:
1.Use a graphic editing application such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or GIMP.

2. Open the image file. Choose an image with a good resolution to blur the background.

3. Use Save As to begin working on a copy of the photo. Never modify your original image.

4. Determine which areas you want to stay in focus (the foreground), and what areas you want to have blurred (the background).

-Set the zoom to see the entire image on your monitor; this will help you get an idea of where to make your selections.

Photoshop: Quick Method

1. Select Layers > Duplicate Layer. This will stack a second, identical layer over your original image.

2. Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. This will blur the entire image; you’ll work backwards from here.

-Play around with different blur radii to create the background effect you want. The larger the radius, the blurrier the image, so if you’re going for a subtle effect, aim low. For example, if you want the background to be very soft and only somewhat identifiable, try a radius of 10. If you want your background just barely blurred, use a radius of .5 or 1.

-Make sure you’re working on the top layer when you add the blur.

3. Erase your subject(s) back into focus. Since the original layer is still intact beneath the blurred one, using the eraser tool on your top layer will expose the clear image underneath.

-Select the Eraser tool from the toolbar to the left.

-Adjust the eraser size as you go. For larger swaths, use a large eraser; for details and edges, use a smaller, more precise eraser.

-Adjust the eraser opacity as you go. For large, interior areas, use a high opacity to erase as thoroughly as possible; for edges, lower the opacity to create a softer, subtler effect. Running a low-opacity eraser over the same place multiple times will have a cumulative effect, so err on the side of low opacity where necessary.

4. When you’re completely satisfied, go to Layer > Flatten Image. This will combine your various layers into one.

Photoshop: Detailed Method 1

1. Select the Lasso Tool from your tool palette. You’ll use this to select the image(s) in the photo that you want to distinguish from your blurred background. Choose the selection type based on what is most suitable for your particular image. Ex.:

-If the image you want to emphasize has very straight edges, right-click to change the lasso to Polygonal, which will create straight lines between the points you click.

-If there’s a sharp, clear edge between the background and the image you want to emphasize, change the lasso to Magnetic, which will find the edge for you.

2. Increase the feather to between 1 and 3 pixels. Feathering your edges will make them softer and subtler – and much more forgiving.

3. Zoom in on your subject(s) so that you can see the edges clearly. This will help you freehand-select more accurately.

4. Click or drag the Lasso tool along the edges of your subject. Be sure to “close the circle” by ending up back where you started and clicking on your origin point. You’ll know your selection is complete once a dotted “marquee” line appears around the edges.

-Make sure you’re working on the top layer when you lasso.

-To add to an already-completed selection, hold down the Shift key while you continue to select. This is a great way to either modify your current selection or simultaneously select a separate subject.

-To subtract from an already-completed selection, hold town the Alt key and select the area you wish to remove, which will then become unselected.

5. Copy the foreground selection by pressing Ctrl-C

6. Paste the foreground selection over top of the existing image. This will create a new layer on top of your original one.

-Usually, this will paste the copied image directly on top of the original one, which means it might not look like anything has changed. Look at your Layers tab (usually in the bottom right-hand corner) to see if a new layer has appeared.

-If this "Layers" toolbar is not visible in Photoshop, go to Window and select in Layers the drop-down list.

-If necessary, use the Move tool, which looks like a cursor arrow, to drag the newly-pasted foreground on top of the existing image so that they match.

7. Select the layer that contains the original image. This is found in the Layers toolbar.

8. Go to Filter > Blur > Blur More. This will blur the background but not the duplicated image of the subject.

-Repeat this Blur More command until you achieve the desired effect. In Photoshop, the Ctrl F keyboard shortcut will repeat the last filter command.

-Alternately, use Gaussian Blur and play around with different blur radii to create the background effect you want. The larger the radius, the blurrier the image, so if you’re going for a subtle effect, aim low. For example, if you want the background to be very soft and only somewhat identifiable, try a radius of 10. If you want your background just barely blurred, use a radius of .5 or 1

9. Make sure your foreground doesn’t appear too sharp. The easiest way to do this is to look at the History toolbar and undo some of your Blur More commands. Alternately, changing how your layers combine can produce nice effects. To do this:

-Try changing the newly copied foreground layer's Opacity. This is visible in the Layers toolbar. A good opacity level to start at is 50%; move up a little at a time until you find a good blend.

-Try changing how the layer combines with other layers by changing its property, also available in the Layers toolbar. For example, try Darken instead of Normal for an artistic sketch effect.

10 . Use the Blur Tool to soften the edges of your in-focus foreground. This should be on the same toolbar as the Lasso Tool.

-Set the blur tool's strength to somewhere around 33%.

-Set your brush size to a comfortable level such as a radius of 5 to 15 pixels. If you don't see a brush size option, select Brushes from the Window menu in Photoshop.

-Use the blur tool to touch up the outside edge of your foreground, especially where the image seems pixelated. This will help to create a sense of transition between your foreground and background that is easy on the eyes.

11. When you’re completely satisfied, go to Layer > Flatten Image. This will combine your various layers into one.

Paint Shop Pro: Quick Method

1. Select Layers > Duplicate. This will stack a second, identical layer over your original image.

2. Select Adjust > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Make sure you’re working on the top layer when you add the blur.

3. Erase your subject(s) back into focus. Since the original layer is still intact beneath the blurred one, using the eraser tool on your top layer will expose the clear image underneath.
Select the Eraser tool from the toolbar to the left.
Adjust the eraser size as you go. For larger swaths, use a large eraser; for details and edges, use a smaller, more precise eraser.
Adjust the eraser opacity as you go. For large, interior areas, use a high opacity to erase as thoroughly as possible; for edges, lower the opacity to create a softer, subtler effect. Running a low-opacity eraser over the same place multiple times will have a cumulative effect, so err on the side of low opacity where necessary.

4. When you’re completely satisfied, go to Layers > Merge > Merge All. This will combine your various layers into one.

TIPS:
-This technique produces somewhat artificial looking images. If you want a more natural look, blend your blur so it truly only affects items in the background. In the example above, if the grass in front of the child were still sharp it would more accurately simulate a narrow "depth of field", which would look more natural.

-Some digital editing programs have a feature known as zoom blur that allows you to pick a point in your image and blur out from that point.

-The higher the megapixels of your camera, the better your image resolution will be. It is difficult to enhance a picture with a lower resolution.

-Using digital editing to blur the background does not create true depth because it blurs everything in the background uniformly rather than independently based on distance from the lens. If you are using Photoshop CS2 it now offers a 'smart blur' option in the filters sections under blur. The filter takes into account the depth of field and perspective and applies more blurring to pixels it interprets as farther away and less to pixels perceived as closer to the subject. The filter is also adjustable so it is better to gradually add the effect until you have the look desired.

-Be very precise in outlining your foreground; otherwise, it will look choppy.

-Before making any alterations to a photograph, make a copy, then convert the copy to 16 million colors, if it is not already set for 16 million colors. All of the algorithms in these digital darkroom programs work better in 16 million colors than in other modes.

How to Install BitTorrent Using Azureus Client

BitTorrent is a protocol that facilitates the sharing of files over the Internet. Follow these instructions to configure your PC to access BitTorrent downloads using the Azureus BitTorrent client.

STEPS:
1. Download and install Java, version 1.5.x or greater, if you don't already have it on your PC. See external links below.

2. Download and install Azureus client. See external links below for download link.

3. Download and install the Azureus Safepeer plugin. See external links below for download link.

4. Change the default port for Azureus. Azureus only uses 1 port (unlike some other BitTorrent clients) and the default BitTorrent ports (6881-6889) may be blocked by your ISP. Open Azureus, click View > Config > Server and change the number before Incoming TCP listen port. Choose any number between 49152 and 65535. If you use a firewall you will have to add this port for forwarding to your computer's IP address.

5. While you are in the config area, click the transfer section to set your max upload and download speed. Try download 0 (i.e. maximum) and upload between 10-25. Adjust downward if you find it is slowing your web browsing.

6. Also in the config area, you can set things like the default download folder and where you want the .torrent files to be saved until you have finished the download.

7. To hitch in to the network, you need .torrent files. These tell your Azureus client where to find files on other BitTorrent PCs on the internet. See external links.

TIPS :

-Unlike Kazaa, Gnutella and other P2P filesharing networks where you have a program on the computer, open it up and enter the file you are looking for in the search box to get a list of files, BitTorrent uses trackers.

-Do not set upload speed to 0 (i.e. maximum). Due to the way TCP works, when A is downloading something from B it has to keep telling B that it received the data sent to him. (These are called acknowledgements - ACKs -, a sort of "got it!" messages). If A fails to do this then B will stop sending data and wait. If A is uploading at full speed there may be no bandwidth left for the ACKs and they will be delayed. So due to this effect, excessively high upload speeds lead to low download speeds.

-If you try to be a free rider and download without contributing uploads, you risk being banned by sites that require a reasonable ratio of uploads to downloads.

-If you are trying to download a new file with 1 seeder and 50 leechers it will be slow. Either wait a few hours for the seeders to increase or look on a different site. The number of seeders and leechers will usually be displayed, so a file with 130 seeders and 40 leechers will download fast, as a rough guide 700mb will download in around 4 hours if it has plenty of seeders.

-If you are connected to the internet via a router, be sure to check www.portforward.com for instructions on how to open the port that you set Azureus to use in the config.

How to Download a Movie

Downloading movies from the Internet has become a good option due to the growth of file sharing technologies and the availability of high-speed network connections. If you have a good Internet connection and some free space on your hard drive, you can easily learn how to download a movie even if you are a novice computer user.

Steps:

Method One: Free Sources

1. Be aware of the legality. In most jurisdictions, downloading a movie that you are not purchasing legitimately, and don't already own on another format (such as a DVD), is in violation of copyright laws.

Films which are in the public domain will not be subject to this rule; they are free to use and not governed by any intellectual property laws. Be careful to address the legality of downloading a particular film before you begin.

2. Download and install a BitTorrent client. While many other file sharing protocols exist, BitTorrent is the most effective and popular method for downloading feature-length films. To use this method, you will need to install a piece of client software on your computer. Many of these applications are available for free; some of the most popular clients are Tixati, Vuze, Transmission, and uTorrent.

3. Search for the movie on a BitTorrent search engine. After installing your torrent client software, you can download the torrent file for the movie you wish to watch.

-The best way to do this is to search for the film on a torrent search engine. These sites are often available for a limited time, however, as they are subject to shut down by law enforcement officials.
-You can also find torrent files using a regular search engine. A torrent file has a ".torrent" extension, and is actually just a text file telling your torrent client where to download the pieces of the movie.

4. Load the torrent file into your BitTorrent software to begin the download. Double-click on the torrent file to load it into your torrent client. The download should begin automatically. Once the file has downloaded completely, leave the torrent software open for several hours to allow other users to download the file from you. This will improve your "torrent ratio," and will allow you to download additional files more quickly.

5. Open the movie file in a media player application. Once the torrent has finished downloading, your client software will save the actual video file on your hard drive (check the settings in your torrent software to determine where the file is saved). Double-click the file to open it in your default media player. You can safely delete the torrent file itself once the video clip has finished downloading.

Method Two: Paid Sources

1. Visit an online movie site. The easiest and most worry-free way of downloading movies is to buy them from a reputable source. Companies such as Netflix and Apple have led the way, offering movies for both rent and purchase, many other companies have sprung up offering inexpensive alternatives to purchasing a DVD.

-If you're an avid movie watcher, having an online account with Netflix costs about $8 (USD) a month, and delivers more movies than you can watch in a lifetime!

-For very new movies, Apple frequently offers movies that are still showing in the theaters. Until the film leaves the theaters, though, you'll usually have to purchase the movie at about the price of a normal DVD.

2. Set up an account. Before you get started downloading movies and throwing a popcorn-and-B-night extravaganza, you'll need to sign up for an account. Usually this involves nothing more than an email address and username.

-Some companies, such as Netflix or Hulu, use a subscription method. You pay a low, flat fee every month for unlimited downloads. This is great if you like to watch a lot of movies, and don't want to hassle with payments every time the movie mood strikes you.

-Companies like Apple or CinemaNow (BestBuy) offer pay-as-you-go rental or purchase, and can be significantly more expensive than subscription services—especially if you love movies—but they also tend to offer more current content, and content from premium cable channels such as HBO and Showtime.

-Movie download sites such as Yaboon and its affiliates offer "10,000" movies, and require that you fill your account with at least $20 before you can purchase a movie, though the prices per movie are very reasonable.

3. Browse the directory of movies. No matter which option you choose, with thousands of movies available on each of these sites, the first thing you'll want to find is a way to narrow your options. Many sites have a genre column, so that you can quickly focus only on topics that interest you.

-Feeling like you want to revisit the dark side of 50s and 60s cinema? Click on "Film Noir." If that's too dark, try "Comedy" or "Drama" instead.

-If you're wanting to locate particular movies or actors, there should be a search field at the top of the page.

4. Download the movie. When you've found a movie to your liking, click the appropriate button. On services such as Yaboon, it's a simple click of the Download button. For sites that offer options, such as Apple, you'll see both a Buy and a Rent button. Whichever button fits your needs, click it. Your movie will download, and depending on the speed of your connection, you could be watching in just a few minutes!

TIPS :

-If downloading a movie over Bit torrent keep your antivirus up to date as viruses lurk in those files.

-Torrents files with a large number of "seeders" (users who are sharing the whole file) will download the fastest.

-Pay-for sites often make the films available for smart phones and tablets as well as computers.

-Before entering credit card information, do a little research and make sure that you're working with a reputable company.

-The website Archive.org maintains a large database of public domain films. If the film in which you're interested is public domain, consider checking for it on this site (or a similar site) first.

-Before signing up for a download website, create an email address on Yahoo or Gmail just for that site. Often times, email lists are sold to third parties—which can quickly result in a flood of spam.

-Don't like watching movies on a computer? Get an Apple-TV, Roku, or Boxee set-top box, and stream iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, and much more directly onto your television—in high-definition.
